  • Directions in Managua

Driving to work just now I heard a commercial on the radio.  It was advertising some sort of business or something, I was not paying that much attention. But then the directions to find this place caught my attention.

"De donde fue...2 cuadras al lago y una arriba"

Now let me translate that, but before I do, please remember that this is in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, and a pretty big city:

"From where the...was, 2 blocks to the lake (there are 2 lakes and an ocean around Managua, but we all 'know' that that means the lake to the north), and one 'up.' "

Focusing just on the second part of the directions: 'up' cannot mean north, because that is what "towards the lake" means, so what does 'up' mean?? It means east.  How do we just know that?  Because 'abajo' or 'down' means toward the ocean, as in down in elevation.  The ocean is to the west, so 'up', or 'away from the ocean', clearly means east!

Now for the more interesting/confusing first part of the directions: "From where the such and such building was..."  How in the world is anybody supposed to know where that building was unless they have lived here forever?  Don't worry, you are in luck: if you so happen to get into the general proximity of where a currently nonexistent building still holds authority through it's directional purposes, there may very well be a wall with the words "This was the such and such building" painted on it, and from there you can direct yourself around. If you know where the lake/ocean is in relation to your totally turned around world at this point That is only if you are lucky enough to stumble on the historical site though!

Life in Managua sure is interesting! But it is kind of comforting to know that even if a business moves or a tree gets cut down, people still remember what is was and where it was in relation to the rest of the city; and, in memorial, I believe, use it to give directions in the future.

I love life and it's adventures!

    Happy Thanksgiving,

  • Cherished

I just spent the weekend 3 hours north of Jinotega with my friend Cherith.  She has been living here in Nicaragua and serving a missionary family for the last 6 months or so.  One of the boys of the family calls her "Cherished," and it is the perfect way to describe her!  I have known her for only 3 months, but God brought us together right when we both needed each other most. And it has been - and will continue to be - such a beautiful and awesome friendship.

Here is a picture of us when she came to visit me back in October; we were going out to see the Russian Ballet:

I am thankful for Cherith in so many ways:
    • She is such an amazing example of Christ's love for all around her
    • She shines with His light
    • She is kind and gentle,
    • Patient and so incredibly caring
    • She is creative and inspired
    • It is so fun to watch her in the kitchen and with the kids of the family she lived with
    • She is wise
    • Her desire to serve goes beyond the here and now
    • She is faithful
    • She is welcoming and open
I could go on and on in the ways that she has blessed my life with her example and her friendship.  God truly is amazing!  She flew out yesterday morning, it was so hard to see her go, to see her say goodbye to her new brothers and sisters.

I still can't totally wrap my mind around the fact that she is not here.  It just seems unreal.  I pray that God will keep her and guide her; that she will continue to seek after Him and that He will continue to bless her.  I pray that her dreams and goals will be realized and that God would use her in so many beautiful ways, as He has begun to do already.

I love you, Cherith, and I will miss you!

Missing a friend, but eversothankful for her presence in my life,

  • [Untitled]

As I have mentioned before, my office "building" has a courtyard which all of our offices face.  I love seeing even just a small glimpse of nature every time I look up from my compy.

The dry season has started.  That means w*a*r*m temps and no rain for months.  So we decide to water the grass in the courtyard.  Starting at 10am.  [cringes]

After working maintenance for a year and becoming very familiar with the sprinkler system at Kuyper, I cringe when I see people watering during the day - the hottest part of the day - knowing that most of that sprinkled water, will just evaporate...

    sigh.
